Introduction

ACA19 – Sharing & Regeneration

The power of sharing, thanks to the advances in technology that annihilate the physical boundaries, has emerged around the globe. This power, although has been interrupted by the abrupt outbreak of the COVID-19, has already established strong connections between regions, nations, cities, communities and families. It, under the challenges of the pandemic, allows us to share resources, technologies, emotions and knowledge and, in this way, gives us the strength to keep holding together.

Therefore, for contemporary architects, building a built environment that can be shared by
all becomes an essential responsibility. Fulfilling this responsibility, as clearly shown by the architectural works awarded by the council, is the fundamental value the Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) pursuits. The effort of realizing the power of sharing, in turn, continuously promotes the diversity and inclusiveness of ARCASIA and Asian architecture and makes it a globally influential force.

Meanwhile, sharing also promotes the regeneration of contemporary Asian architecture. As we understand how Asian architecture evolves, we now treasure the value of people, respect the tradition of cultures and embrace the lifestyle of sustainable living to an unprecedented extent. These allow the young generation of Asian architects to have more flexible ways to practice, more embracive concepts to design and more efficient technologies to communicate. The young generation, as a result, is now playing an increasingly influential role on the global stage. Besides, rapid urbanization and massive urban regeneration in Asia have offered great opportunities

for architects to practice. Asian architects, as a result, become increasingly conscious of the inseparable relationship between their own works and the urban built environment as a whole. This trend has led to greater social responsibility and regional sensibility in Asian architects’ works which deserve worldwide attention.

Against these backdrops, the 19th Asian Congress of Architects (ACA 19) is themed as “Sharing & Regeneration”. It concentrates our intention of promoting a collective voice of Asian architecture in this difficult yet promising age.
